Superior Foes of Spider-Man #5 came out last week. I’ll be direct. I know a lot of folks didn’t pick it up, possibly because it’s called “Superior Foes of Spider-Man.”

Don’t let that scare you off. The reviewers all looked at that title and had the same reaction you did. But here’s what they’re saying now:

The Onion AV Club: “Gut-busting ensemble comedy and slick cartooning that has made the series one of the year’s funniest comics and a top Marvel title.”

Writer Matt Fraction was at the center of a special signing appearance for “Hawkeye” #7, autographing copies of the Hurricane Sandy-themed issue and raising money for the American Red Cross.

“The whole book is about the dude who doesn’t have superpowers so it seemed like if we were going to try to do something to help people, that’s the book to do it…hopefully we’ll be able to write some checks and do a little good,” Fraction told CBR during the event about the special issue of the popular Marvel series.

Inspired to write the issue after Hurricane Sandy decimated parts of New York and New Jersey, Fraction is donating his royalties from the issue to the American Red Cross. Though the Portland-based writer was not in New York when Sandy hit, the devastation left in the storm’s wake prompted him to want to do something to help the victims.

“I spent an awful lot of time there and had lived there for business purposes,” Fraction explained. “I realized that not only would I have been evacuated, I would have been under water if I was still there in the place I had been living.”

Sequential Art Gallery presents Steve Lieber’s original art from Caitlin R. Kiernan’s “ALABASTER: WOLVES”, sponsored in part by both Dark Horse Comics & Bridge City Comics. With the mini-series newly collected & released in hardcover, copies of “Alabaster: Wolves” will available for sale & for signing by Lieber. The exhibit opens this Thursday, February 7th, with the artist’s reception & book signing from 6pm to 10pm.

“Alabaster: Wolves” marks the first appearance of Caitlin R. Kiernan’s demon-hunting, monster-killing character, Dancy Flammarion, in comic book form. Unexpectedly left alone by the powers that guide her, Dancy faces off against a family of demonic wolves. Lieber’s art pairs brilliantly with Kiernan’s storytelling, providing the reader with the beautiful-and-terrifying fever dream that is Dancy’s life.

“Alabaster: Wolves” will be on display throughout the month of February, with gallery hours on Thursdays from 3pm-7pm (except for Valentine’s Day), Saturdays from 11am-5pm, and by appointment. “Alabaster: Wolves” will close at the end of business on Thursday, February 28th.

I recently learned that Shooters, the contemporary war graphic novel I illustrated for DC/Vertigo will be reissued in a new paperback edition this may. Shooters was written by Eric Trautmann and Brandon Jerwa. It made Comic Book Resources’ Best of 2012 list. And here’s a review.

The fifth and final issue of Alabaster:Wolves comes out next week from Dark Horse Comics. Alabaster was created and written by Caitlin R Kiernan, and the comic has featured lineart by me, color by Rachelle Rosenberg, and covers by Greg Ruth.

I’ve had a terrific time drawing this series, and the wonderful reception we’ve had from fans has been truly gratifying. I should take a moment to say thanks to Hunter Wook-Jin Clark, Tina Kim, and especially Tadd Galusha for their valuable assistance on the project. Also Dylan Meconis who posed for a million reference photos, and probably knows Dancy better than I do.
